A Hybrid Concept
Stéphanie de Loustal Things change, we are well aware of that, and motorboat clientele are no exception!
That is the conclusion reached among the major players in the European boat industry.

Boaters in northern Europe dream of brighter, more open boats with large cockpits, while those in southern Europe, in addition to a well-designed craft, are looking for a degree of onboard comfort generally reserved for cruising boats.
In short, for a year or two now, we have been seeing the emergence of extremely adaptable boats that are in fact the result of a cross between the rather traditional concepts of the Scandinavian countries and the much more progressive ideas of those along the Mediterranean. The Marino APB 27, which we are going to be showing in our coming issue, is a perfect example of this, as is the NC 11 by Jeanneau, discovered at the Düsseldorf Show this past January and which will be one of the important new models at the Cannes Boat and Yacht Show this coming September.

These two boats, one made in Finland and the other in France, are not designed specifically for Scandinavian or Mediterranean clientele, but European clientele. As such, they act as intermediaries between extremes, like Nimbus in the North and Wally in the South.

It was on that basis that the design office at Jeanneau, in collaboration with the Italian design firm Garroni, launched the NC 11 (New Concept 11). The idea was to offer a hybrid boat that would meet the expectations of Scandinavian boaters as well as southern European customers. To win over the former, the NC 11 is very bright and airy thanks to a panoramic windscreen and sunroof, access to the sea is easy and the size of its cockpit varies depending on where the back seat is positioned. To please the southerners as well, the boat also benefits from the a level layout between the cockpit and the saloon, fully opening rear windows, a port side door offering direct access from the helm to the deck walkway, plus a good degree of comfort, whether at sea or in port. In short, in the age of the euro, it is not only the currency that we have in common with our European friends, we also share our ideas on recreational motor boating, and it is a good thing, because the results are very attractive…
